A local Thai-influenced noodle shop offers an appetizer of fried cubes of tofu alongside a tangy, sweet dipping sauce they call “Awesome Sauce”. Patrons appear to order this dish about as often as spring rolls are ordered in any Vietnamese restaurant, so we decided to find out what mAwesome Sauceakes the sauce so “awesome.”

It turns out that you can make a near-perfect copy (which is, by some accounts, even better than the original) with seven ingredients, all of which are pretty easy to find. The first three you can buy at any well-stocked Asian grocery store (of which KC has several), and the rest are found anywhere.

So without further ado, here is the magic recipe:

“Awesome” Dipping Sauce
Makes about 2/3 cup

Pantainorasingh Sweet Chili Sauce for Spring Roll 6 1/2 tbsp
Huy Fong Sriracha Sauce 2 tbsp + 2 tsp
Rice Vinegar 2 tsp
Soy Sauce 1 tsp
Sugar 1 tsp
Worcestershire Sauce 1/2 tsp
Scallion 1, chopped or minced

Awesome Sauce Ingredients

Mix all ingredients well with a fork or small wire whisk. Cover and let stand 1 hour before serving. Refrigerate leftover sauce.
